On to the state tournament.
The eighth-seeded Stratford High girls lacrosse team battled tough in their SWC quarterfinal on Thursday, falling to top-seeded New Fairfield by a 10-5 score and highlight the sports day for the town’s teams.
Here’s a rundown of what went down:
New Fairfield 14, Stratford 5
Back on May 7, the Red Devils made the long trek to New Fairfield and were blown out by an 18-7 score.
With much more on the line, Stratford battled tough before falling by just single digits.
Edie Threshie and Amanda Ogrodowicz scored two goals each for Stratford, which fell to 7-10 overall. Kassidy Murtha also had a goal while Kelly Goddard had three ground balls and forced a turnover.
Goalie Helen Lefever made eight saves.
The Red Devils now await the start of the Class M state tournament.
Joel Barlow 6, Stratford 5
It was a wild ending—a wild-pitch ending, that is—on Thursday in Redding.
The Falcons scored the game-winning run in walk-off fashion on a wild pitch to pull out a 65- win over the Red Devils.
Zach Fedak had two hits and scored twice for Stratford, which wrapped up its regular season with a 12-8 mark (8-5 in SWC play).
Anthony Torreso also singled, doubled and drove in a run for Stratford, which fell behind 4-0 after two innings only to storm back and take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Red Devils await the start of the SWC playoffs, which will be played on Monday.
Bunnell at Brookfield
The Bunnell at Brookfield game was postponed again, this time getting pushed to Saturday at 1 p.m.
Angela Grindrod broke up the perfect game with a single up the middle to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Panthers turned a handful of Stratford errors and a triad of dink shots that fell in front of outfielders and behind infielders into an eight-run second inning to take control of the game.
Masuk 200, Bunnell 310.
The Bunnell girls golf team lost to Masuk High by a score of 200-310 at the Oronoque Country Club.
Low score for Bunnell went to Shanel Carrasquillo.
