It was a wild and crazy night of boys basketball on Tuesday with one player becoming the second to pass a career milestone this season as their teams flip-flopped each other in the final regular season standings.
Stratford High senior Jack Ryan netted 16 points in the Red Devils game at New Milford, giving him 1,003 points on the season. Earlier this season, Bunnell’s Maximus Edwards surpassed the milestone and is now 13 points away from the school’s all-time leading scorer spot
The Devils lost the game, however, by an 80-76 score, allowing Bunnell—which came from behind to beat Newtown 78-75—to slid into the second spot in the SWC standings.
Stratford will take the third seed into the postseason.
BUNNELL 78, NEWTOWN 75
Edwards and Khalid Moreland combined to score 49 points to lead the Bulldogs to the come-from-behind win.
Edwards netted 29 with Moreland adding 20 as Bunnell finished the regular season 15-5 (11-2 in SWC play). John Giannini and Javon Wilson added 10 points each as the duo also experienced senior night.
The Bulldogs trailed 24-14 after the first quarter, 42-34 at the half, and 58-47 after three quarters.
Edwards scored 13 points in the final quarter with Moreland added 11 over the final eight minutes to spark the victory.
NEW MILFORD 80, STRATFORD 76
Ryan’s 16 points put him past the 1,000-point milestone for his career, but the Red Devils slipped to third with the loss.
Stratford trailed by 21 with six minutes to play and stormed back to within two points with the ball. The Red Devils couldn’t connect, however, as the Green Wave held on.
Stratford finishes the regular season 13-7 (10-3 in SWC play).
Joe August’s 22 points led the Stratford charge while Mike August added 19 to go with Ryan’s 16. Zack Fedak added 13 points.
