LYONS, PA — Ali DuBois (2-0) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight in leading the Stratford Brakettes to a 10-0 victory over Nook 23U Gold in the championship game of the Cornfield Classic Sunday.
The Brakettes finished the tournament 6-0, including a 4-1 win over the Junior Brakettes in the semi-finals earlier Sunday.
Three teams compiled 3-0 records in Saturday’s pool play, but the top-seeded Nook and Junior Brakettes earned byes for Sunday’s elimination round with the Stratford Brakettes seeded third because of the runs allowed tie-breaker.
The extra game didn’t matter as Manager John Stratton’s club (8-1) began with a 5-0 win over the Lehigh Valley 23U team on a three-hitter by Shelton’s Kaysee Talcik (3-0) followed by Abby Abramson’s (2-0) five-hit victory over the Junior Brakettes (5-3).
In the title game, Jolie Duffner went 3-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the first. Denise Denis had two hits, including her 103rd career home run, while Val Soto, Alex Heinen, and Ansonia’s Lauren Pitney had two hits each. Pitney’s were a pair of triples. Megan Hodgdon and Westport’s Gillian Birk also tripled.
Stamford’s Adriana Gambino had four hits, including a triple, and Suto added a pair in the shutout win over Lehigh Valley.
Stamford’s Gabby Laccona, Pitney, Denis and Birk also tripled against the Junior Brakettes, who scored in the fourth on Seymour’s Becca Findley’s triple and an error.
Maggie Britt of Lauralton Hall led the Juniors with two hits.
Against Lehigh Valley, Suto led with two hits, while Duffner and Laccona had triples.
In pool play, the Junior Brakettes beat the Lehigh Valley 18U team 13-3, Lyons Spirit 8-1, and New York WFPS 10-4 with Sydney Senerchia of North Branford, New Canaan’s Gillian Kane, and Bridgeport’s Tiffany Diao all posting victories.
