Bunnell wrestlers have another good week

The Bunnell High wrestling team competed in the Shoreline Scuffle in Branford over the weekend.

Julian DeMatteo (4-1 at 145 pounds), Ryan McLaughlin (3-1 at 120 pounds) and Brandon Toscano (3-1 at 195 pounds) all placed third for the Bulldogs.

Also getting wins were: Tanner Roper at 138, James Depina at 160 and Tyree Hall at Heavyweight.

Last week, Bunnell also wrestled Bethel in an SWC dual meet and came away with a 58-21 win.

McLaughlin pinned his opponent in 1:48. He started aggressively and shot in for a sweep single takedown and immediately went to work on top.  After a two-point near fall and a lot of pressure, he locked up a far side cradle and got the pin.

Freshman Gio Jeanty, at 132 pounds, pinned in the second period. He showed a lot of heart as he fought his way back after giving up the first takedown.  He started the second period on the bottom and was trailing 2-0.  His non-stop movement lead to a reversal to his opponents back to secure the pin.

Roper at 138 pounds scored a quick takedown and first-period pin. DeMatteo at 145 pounds won a 15-4 major decision. Junior James Depina at 160 pounds scored a quick takedown and first-period pin.

And, the final match of the night at 182 pounds was a wild one that went back and forth.

Junior Craig Pressley scored the first takedown and then went back and forth with his opponent. In the third period, he trailed 7-5 with only a minute left in the match.  Craig was able to dig deep, he scored a takedown to tie it and then chain wrestled right into a turn to put the guy on his back and pin him.
