STRATFORD—Just three weeks before the start of the season, Bunnell High girls varsity basketball coach Cheri Eleazer has stepped down from her position, according to Bulldogs athletic director Wayne Thrall.
“She didn’t specify why she was resigning,” Thrall said. “The timing of it is less than desirable.”
Eleazer was a former University of Hartford player where she played for one-time UConn star Jen Rizzotti from 1999 to 2003.
She was hired as the Bunnell girls coach three years ago and posted a 16-45 record.
Her first team in 2016-17 made the state tournament, while the Bulldogs went 4-16 over each of the past two seasons.
Thrall said the position has been posted and he has received some interest and will start interviews soon.
“We’ve had a fair amount of interest in the position and we’ll look for the right fit to take over the program,” Thrall said.
Eleazer was not available for comment as of this posting.
Bunnell opens the season with its first practice on Dec. 2.
The Bulldogs’ first game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17, at West Haven.
