FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Stratford at Branford

Stratford at Branford

Date/Time: Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, 7 p.m.

Site: McVeigh Sports Complex, Branford

Team Records: Stratford 0-1, Branford 0-1.

Last Week: Stratford lost to Notre-Dame Fairfield 41-25; Branford lost to Guilford 20-19.

Key Players: Stratford—Trey Lanham III, Soph., QB; Kaleb Lafontant, Jr., WR-CB; Sy’air James, Soph, FB-MLB; Tommy Cox, Jr., OL-LB; Da’quin Ello, Sr., OL-DL; Branford—Sean Kelly, Sr., QB; Spencer Landsbach, Sr., RB-LB; Aiden MacNeil, Sr., WR-DB; Ian McDonald, Sr., OL-DL; Kam Holmes, Jr, RB.

Outlook: The Red Devils gave up just a few too many big plays to Notre Dame-Fairfield last week but fought gamely to the end with a bunch of new varsity players. Lanham himself showed a big play-making ability, too, with his feet carrying him to the end zone once last week. Branford comes into the week licking its wounds after giving up 13 fourth-quarter points to Guilford in their 20-19 home defeat and will be looking to bounce back from that loss. Holmes scored a pair of touchdowns last week for the Hornets and gained 129 yards on 16 carries.

Coach’s Comment: “Branford is an experienced team with some high hopes going into the season,” Stratford coach Jack Petion said. “I’m sure they are looking to get back on the field with a disappointing one-point loss last week.  We have the ability to compete with them if we are focused throughout the game. We have a young and inexperienced group so we are still focused on teaching the game of football to improve on a weekly basis. This game will come down to effort and which team makes the least amount of mistakes.”
