With the calendar having rolled over September to October, both Stratford and Bunnell have found themselves in the meet of their fall schedules.

And it hasn’t been an easy run of things.

Here’s what has happened over the past couple of days of this week:

Brookfield 3, Stratford 1

The Stratford High School boys soccer team lost to Brookfield, 3-1, on Thursday at Brookfield.

Stratford took the lead within the first five minutes, after senior Thomas Castro slotted the ball past the goalkeeper after receiving a pass from freshman Adrian Duque from the center of the field.

It was Stratford’s first lead this season.

But then Brookfield applied pressure and was able to play most of the rest of the first half in Stratford’s defensive half, scoring off a corner kick with about 15 minutes before halftime.

In the second half. Brookfield kept the pressure on, though Stratford looked threatening at times on the counter. The Red Devils were never able to build through the midfield and play in Brookfield’s half.

Two defensive errors led to Brookfield’s second and third goals, and the host team held the lead until the final whistle.

Junior Dylan Richards had several key saves in goal.

Stratford’s next game is against Masuk, at home, at Penders Field, at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Stratford in action at Barlow

On Wednesday, the Stratford Boys cross country team traveled to Joel Barlow High School to go up against the Falcons, Immaculate Mustangs, and the Bethel Wildcats in a Southwest Conference 5K matchup.

All racers in this one had to face steamy conditions, with close to record second setting high temperatures, cloudy skies, and the occasional light shower at times.

The course is described as covering the entire campus, multi-terrain, numerous pitches and angles, winding and hilly trails that involve at least one mile of pure woods.

The race was the start of three meets in six days for Stratford.

Stratford coming off a home meet sweep from last week, had to face an uphill battle right from the start as they would be without their No. 3 runner Tyler Ciufo, who was out due to injury.

A field of sixty-nine toed the line as the starting pistol went off.

Stratford’s Elijah Brown led his team and stayed in the Top 20. Teammate Joshua Kydes continued his excellent season going in what now for Stratford became a race for individual times.

Brown came in sixteenth overall at 19:28. Kydes in at 20:32.

Stratford’s Paul Duncanson managed a finish of 22:23.  Teammates Amos Colocho came in at 27:06, Ryan Munoz at 29:25, and rounding out the Stratford six, Drilon Nasufi at 29:53.

Final scores were: Immaculate over Barlow 28-29; Immaculate over Bethel 25-32 and Stratford 15-50; Barlow over Bethel 27-30 and over Stratford 15-50; Bethel over Stratford 16-45.

Up next for Stratford, at Milford’s Eisenhower Park, Friday October 4, against Jonathan Law, Platt Tech, and West Haven High Schools.
