The Bunnell boys and girls soccer programs earned a Tuesday sweep over Kolbe Cathedral while the Stratford boys cross country team edged out Masuk by two points in a thrilling dual meet finish, highlighting the first busy day of the fall sports season.
Here’s a rundown of what happened locally:
Bunnell 7, Kolbe Cathedral 3
Olivia Kells scored five goals to lead the Bulldogs to the road win.
Fabiola Millen Faust-in and Jamies Hopkins also scored for the Bulldogs, who evened their record at 1-1.
Goalie Sarah Vilarinho made five saves.
Bunnell out-shot Kolbe by a 19-5 count.
Bunnell 5, Kolbe Cathedral 1
Quinton Budnick scored a hat trick to lead the Bulldogs to the home win over Kolbe. Kolly DaSilva and Nick Petrino added a goal each, as well.
Bethel 6, Stratford 0

Stratford edges Masuk in boys XC
The Stratford Boys Cross Country team traveled to the Great Hollow Lake Fields at Wolfe Park in Monroe to face off against the Masuk Panthers, the Pomperaug Panthers, and the New Milford Green Wave.
The best dual match of the day proved to be Stratford and Masuk with the Red Devils eking out a 27-29 win.
The SouthWest Conference early-season surprise runner of the year, Stratford’s Joshua Kydes, claimed the top spot between these two clubs with a 19:42 finish. He was followed by teammate Elijah Brown at 19:50.
Masuk’s Zaccheri Marra led his team against Stratford with a 19:57 time. His teammate Aiden Donnelly cruised in at 21:07.
Stratford’s Tyler Ciufo (21:17) raced around the final turn, unchallenged, giving Stratford the fifth spot between the two teams.
But Masuk’s Michael Eisenman (22:01) and Jacob Lee (22:02) kept this matchup within one team point.
Stratford’s Paul Duncanson answered with an eighth-place finish in a time of 22:52.
Masuk’s Daniel Rodriguez sped his way across the line at 23:03 making this battle even closer.
Stratford’s hopes of winning now rested on the shoulders of freshman Amos Colocho.
Colocho could be seen coming out of the woods and he turned it on to give the pesky Stratford runners its first victory on the young season.
Stratford’s Ryan Munoz bettered his time from last week with a 28:21 effort and Drillon Nusafi made his SHS career debut in 29:03.
Up next for Stratford, Tuesday September 24th, the home opener, at Wooster Middle School, 4:30 pm, against the Notre Dame-Fairfield Lancers and the Kolbe Cathedral Cougars.
Newtown 94, Bunnell 68
The Bulldogs got a win from Rose Nieto in the 200 IM (2:20.55) to highlight the day.
Pomperaug at Stratford
