H.S. ROUNDUP: Bunnell girls soccer and volleyball notch big wins

The Bunnell girls soccer team moved a win closer to a possible state tournament berth while the Bulldogs volleyball team notched its first win of the season, highlighting Thursday’s high school schedule.

GIRLS SOCCER

Bunnell 2, Joel Barlow 1

Fabiola Millien Faustin and Olivia Kells scored goals as the Bulldogs stunned Joel Barlow by a 2-1 score at home on Thursday.

Sarah Tartaglio made seven saves for Bunnell, which was outshot by an 8-6 count but still got the win.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-8 and will have to split their final two games to qualify for the state tournament.

New Fairfield 8, Stratford 0

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Stratford 3, Kolbe Cathedral 1

The Red Devils notched their 10th win of the season with a 24-26, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 win over Kolbe Cathedral on Thursday.

Sydney Ritchie had 15 service points, eight kills, seven digs and nine assists for the Red Devils, who are 5-6 in SWC play.

Julie Carbone added 11 service points, 7 of which came on aces, along with two kills and two digs and Rachel Newall had eight service points, 12 digs and a trio of aces.

Bunnell 3, Bethel 1

The Bulldogs notched their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Bethel.

The win snapped a 19-match losing streak, as well.

BOYS SOCCER

Joel Barlow 1, Bunnell 0

Owen Jaekle had a couple big saves to keep Bunnell in the game, but the Bulldogs just couldn’t find the equalizer.

Bunnell is now 6-4-3 on the season heading into Saturdays game against Stratford. The contest will start at 3 p.m. at Mastroni Field.
