The Bunnell High School lacrosse programs earned a Thursday sweeping over Notre Dame-Fairfield, highlighting a busy day of sports action around town.
The Bulldog boys bested the Lancers by a 9-3 count on the road while the girls team rebounded from an emotional loss to cross-town rival Stratford by rolling to an 18-2 victory on the BHS field.
Here is how the entire Thursday in sports went:
Bunnell 18, Notre Dame-Fairfield 2
Sophomore Morgan Reilly and freshman Mariana Trovarelli scored five goals each to lead an offensive explosion for the Bulldogs.
Bunnell’s 16-goal margin of victory matched the largest-ever win in the program’s history, equaling the team’s 22-6 win over Holy Cross in May of 2014.
Reilly added three assists for the Bulldogs while Trovarelli assisted on two other goals, as well.
Christina di Benedetto had three goals and an assist while Cat Nelson (1 assist) and Ashley Rivera tallied single goals. Holly Rosa also had an assist for Bunnell, which improved to 4-5.
Goalie Tatiana Wright made 7 saves.
The Bulldogs host Watertown on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Bunnell 9, Notre Dame-Fairfield 3
Freshman goalie Spenser Tote made 7 saves in his first-ever varsity start to backbone Bunnell’s winning effort on the road.
It was Bunnell’s third straight win as the Bulldogs improved to 4-5.
Will Heiden and Charles Stewart scored three goals each for Bunnell while Anthony Trovarelli, Jacob Kudysch, and Brian Carrafiello had single tallies each.
The Bulldogs host New Fairfield on Tuesday.
Stratford 18, Kolbe Cathedral 4
Riley Matto went 4-for-5 with six RBIs to lead Stratford to an 18-4 bounce-back win over Koble Cathedral in Bridgeport on Thursday.
The Red Devils put up crooked numbers in each and every inning behind winning pitcher Angela Grindrod, who hurled a four-hitter.
Grindrod also went 3-for-5 with four RBIs while Bella DeLorenzo had a home run and two RBIs for Stratford. Rachel Newall chipped in with three more RBIs, as well.
Stratford hosts Weston on Saturday at DeLuca Field.
Notre Dame-Fairfield 4, Bunnell 2
Brett Batka was the hard-luck loser for Bunnell, giving up just three hits and no earned runs while striking out six.
Cullen Roper and Diego Jasso (1 RBI) had two hits each while Taylor Perry doubled.
Bethel 3, Stratford 0
The Red Devils hit the road and went to Bethel, where they could only manage two hits on the day.
Braydon Seaburg doubled and RJ Burlone singled to account for the lone safeties.
Stratford is now 5-6 overall, 3-3 in SWC play.
Bunnell, Weston at Brookfield
On Wednesday, the Bunnell Bulldogs traveled to Brookfield to take on the Bobcats, the Rebels of New Fairfield, and the Trojans of Weston.
Highlighting Bunnell’s day was the 4×100 relay team of Alex Mosley, Tyreek Smith, Marquise Lawrence, and Christ N’Dabian. They took the top overall spot in a time of 43.44.
The 100-meter dash saw N’Dabian in first place overall at 10.84 and Mosley in the third spot at 11.06.
In the 300 hurdles, Derek Celestin was the top finisher with time of 45.9 seconds.
N’Dabian continued to shine as he took the top spot in the 200 with a finish of 22.2 seconds.
Rounding out the Bulldog effort, it was Smith taking the top spot in the high jump with a 20-4 feet jump.
Team scoring saw New Fairfield edge Bunnell 78-72; Weston 108, Bunnell 42; and Bunnell over Brookfield 90-60.
Up next for the Bulldogs, on Monday, the team hosts the Nighthawks starting at 4 p.m.
Stratford 259, Notre Dame-Fairfield 286
Stratford Boys Golf won its first match yesterday against ND Fairfield on the red course at Fairchild Wheeler.
The team of Zack Terlik, Ethan Gonzalez, and Tyler Tripodi all shot their best round of the year to combine for the win. Terlik was the medalist with a 45 anchored by a 14 putt performance on the greens with a borrowed putter nonetheless.
The team is back in action next week in a rematch against ND Fairfield at Mill River on Tuesday.
Immaculate 221, Bunnell 312
The Immaculate girls golf team defeated Bunnell by a score of 221 to 312. The low score for Bunnell goes to Shanel Carrasquillo.
Newtown 236, Stratford 326
The Nighthawks visited Mill River on Thursday and got the win over the Red Devils.
Melissa Wilson had the low round of the day for Stratford.
Bethel 6, Bunnell 1
Keane Alindato pulled out the win at No. 4 singles, posting an exciting 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3 win to earn the Bulldogs lone point.
The No. 2 doubles team of Sara Federici and Kerina Mandle split sets 6-0, 4-6, before falling 10-6 in a tie-breaker.
Bethel 7, Bunnell 0
Bethel blanked Bunnell by a 7-0 score. No further information was reported for this match.
