The Bunnell High track teams earned a sweep of Stratford and the Red Devils celebrated a pair of Senior Days with wins to highlight Wednesday’s sports action around town.

Here’s a rundown:


Bunnell 97, Stratford 51

On Wednesday, at Bunnell High School, the Bulldogs hosted cross town rival Stratford, Masuk, and Notre Dame-Fairfield in Southwest Conference high school track and field.

Despite an injury to one of its top athletes, the Bulldogs managed three wins on the day.

As usual, senior Christ N’Dabian lived up to expectations in the 100-meter dash.  He would survive his toughest win on the year by slightly edging out Masuk’s Conor Mahoney.

N’Dabian was clocked at 11.0 with Mahoney at 11.01.  Third place went Bunnell’s Marquise Lawrence at 11.2.

In the 200-meter dash, N’Dabian and Mahoney would face off once again. N’Dabian again took the victory with a time of 22.0. Mahoney at 22.4.

Tyreek Smith was scratched from the lineup due to injury leaving a large hole to fill in numerous events for Bunnell.

Stepping up in the long jump was Stephen Blake in first place at 20-5. Alex Knight did his part in the triple jump. His 37-9  jump was good enough for third place.

Also scoring points, and on the rise, for the Bulldogs was Justice Devonish in the javelin. His throw of 130 feet landed him a second-place finish.

The 4×800 team of Eric Acuna, Maurice Neri, Ryan Ortega, and Mario Oliva added a second-place overall finish with a time of 9:27.

Oliva would go on to two more second-place spots. In the 1600-meter race, he managed a time of 5:05. In the 800, he earned a time of 2:21. 

In the 300 hurdles, Derek Celestin grabbed third place for the Bulldogs and continues to improve in his first full year of hurdling.

Jon Gulish helped the cause with a season best in the 400 finishing third at 53.3 seconds.

Rounding out Bunnell’s day was the 4×400 race. The team of Alex Mosley, Lawrence, Gulish, and N’Dabian continue to get better with a season best of 3:33.0, taking first place.

Stratford got wins out of Khalil Carr in the 400 (51.7 seconds) and Dominic Gomes in the 800 (2:19).


Bunnell 134, Stratford 16

The Bulldogs had a solid meet, beating the Red Devils and Notre Dame-Fairfield while falling 80-70 to Masuk.

Winners for Bunnell included: Jojo Cruz in the shot put (33-3), Jasmine St. Clair in the discus (87-5), Shania Mahabee 7-0 in the pole vault; Jayleen Herrera in the triple jump (31-3) and Natalie Farrell in the 1,600 (6:19).

The Bulldogs’ 4×100 relay team of Dardielle Exantus, Abby Williams, Toni Greene, and Kayla Phommachnah won in 50.3 seconds.

For Stratford, Chi-Chi Anekwe won the long jump with a leap of 17-6.


Stratford 5, Masuk 1

The Red Devils celebrated Senior Day with its fourth straight win to improve to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in SWC play.

Zach Fedak fired a three-hitter, giving up just one run. He aided his own cause with an RBI single.

Logan Zezima led the Red Devils with two hits and two RBIs while Anthony Torreso doubled and scored a run.

Stratford closes out the regular season with a game at Joel Barlow today.


Stratford 12, Platt Tech 11

After giving up four runs in the top of the eighth inning, host Stratford put up a five spot in the bottom of the inning to pull out a thrilling 12-11 win over Platt Tech on Senior Night.

Hayden Smith’s game-winning, RBI single in bottom of the eighth was the game-winner. It came after Nae Nae Alston delivered a two-run single to tie the game.

Riley Matto was 4-for-5 with three doubles to lead Stratford. Rachel Newall was 3-for-4 with a home run.

Angela Grindrod, who struck out 10 from the circle, had two hits and two RBIs. Skyler Boibeaux contributed a two-run single in the seventh to help Stratford tie the game at 7-7.

Brookfield 23, Bunnell 0

Ymoni Ortiz had her team’s lone hit as the Bulldogs fell on the road at Brookfield.


Fairfield Warde 15, Stratford 2

Stratford finishes the season 2-14.


Masuk 214, Stratford 311
