H.S. ROUNDUP: Gonzales shines as Bunnell girls track sweeps tri-meet

It took an extra day for the starting gun to go off, but the Bunnell girls track team swept its season-opening meet over Immaculate and New Milford, highlighting Wednesday’s action around town.

Here’s your daily rundown of what went on:

GIRLS TRACK

Bunnell 108 Immaculate 38

Bunnell 96.5 New Milford 52.5

Senior Keseri Gonzales won two events and helped lead the Bunnell 4×100 team to a win to highlight the day for the Bulldogs.

Gonzales won the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.8) and joined teammates Dardielle Exantus, Kayla Phommachnah, and Abby Williams in placing first in the 4×100 relay in 50.8 seconds.

Williams also went on to win the long jump (16-8) while Exantus won the 300 hurdles (56.3 seconds).

Also on the track, Susie Poisson won the 100 hurdles in 18 seconds flat.

The Bulldogs also took first in two of three weight events as Yovanna Cruz won the shot put with a throw of 30-8 while Jasmine St. Clair took first in the discus with a toss of 91-9.

Two other field event victories came courtesy of Jayleen Herrera, who won the triple jump (28-9), and Shania Mahabee, who won the pole vault with a leap of 7-6.

The Bulldogs will compete again on Tuesday at Weston.

BASEBALL

New Fairfield 8, Stratford 0

The Red Devils were three=hit at home by a New Fairfield team which won its third game in four outings this season.

R.J. Burlone had two of the hits for the Red Devils, who slipped to 2-2.

Stratford plays at Notre Dame-Fairfield on Friday at 4:15 p.mm.

Bunnell at Immaculate postponed

Unplayable field conditions in Danbury postponed Wednesday’s game between the Bulldogs and Mustangs.

The game will be played on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.

GIRLS GOLF

Brookfield 259, Stratford 296

The Red Devils notched their lowest team score of the season on Wednesday at the Sunset Hill Golf Course.

Ruhuan Liao was the team’s low scorer on the day.

Joel Barlow 289, Bunnell 301

At the Redding Country Club, playing its second match in three straight days to open the season, the Bulldogs fell by just 12 strokes to Joel Barlow.

Low score for the day belongs to Danka Hlinka with a 64.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Fairfield 7, Bunnell 0

Top singles player Luci Li gave New Fairfield’s No. 1 all she handle on Wednesday, falling 9-7 to highlight the day for the Bulldogs.

New Milford 6, Stratford 1

The Red Devils fell on the road at New Milford with senior captain Kelly Londa winning her match 8-6 at fourth singles to learn the Red Devils’ point.

SOFTBALL

Bunnell at Immaculate postponed

Unplayable field conditions in Danbury postponed Wednesday’s game between the Bulldogs and Mustangs.

The game will be played on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
