A thrilling victory and a heart-breaking defeat for the town’s baseball teams were the story of the day in high school sports.
Here’s a look at what went down on Wednesday:
Stratford 2, Brookfield 1
Malcolm Kinder doubled in Anthony Torreso in bottom of 6th for game winner as Stratford won its third straight SWC game, 2-1, over Brookfield at Penders Field.
R.J. Burlone’s RBI double staked the Red Devils to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Braydon Seaburg had two hits and a run scored.
Mike D’Aloia earned a complete-game win, giving up just four hits.
Stratford, which plays at Bethel on Thursday, is now 5-5 (3-2 in SWC play).
Pomperaug 8, Bunnell 7
The Bulldogs had a five-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn’t hold on as the host Panthers put up six runs to walk off with an 8-7 win in Southbury.
The Bulldogs dropped to 6-4 overall (1-2 SWC) after dropping its second straight 1-run loss.
Henry Gloria allowed just three earned runs and struck out six in six-plus innings.
Colin Richards had two hits and three RBIs, Cullen Roper had two hits, including a 2 run triple, and Tony Broadhurst had two hits, one of which was an RBI double.
Bunnell hosts Notre Dame-Fairfield on Thursday.
Brookfield 14, Stratford 3
Stratford’s defense, which had been so good all season long, let itself down on Wednesday as eight Red Devil errors let Brookfield roll away with a 14-3 win.
Seven of those runs came in the top of the seventh when Brookfield blew the game open.
Riley Matto had two hits and an RBI while Taylor Lubas (2 runs), Rachel Newall (1 run) and Angela Grindrod (RBI) had all the Stratford hits.
Brookfield, which is 9-1, has averaged 13.4 runs per game this season.
The Red Devils (7-2) face Kolbe Cathedral at Longfellow Park on Thursday.
Pomperaug 20, Bunnell 0
Pomperaug defeated Bunnell by a 20-0 score on Wednesday. No further information on this game was reported.
Brookfield 256, Bunnell 310
The Bunnell girls golf team lost to Brookfield by a score of 256-310 at the Sunset Hill Golf Course.
The low score for Bunnell belonged to Shanel Carrasquillo.
Foran 7, Bunnell 0
In doubles action, Sara Federici and Kerina Mandl battled tough in defeat, falling 7-5, 6-3.
The Bulldogs slipped to 2-4 on the season.
Joel Barlow 7, Stratford 0
Joel Barlow defeated Stratford by a 7-0 score on Wednesday.
