H.S. ROUNDUP: Stratford baseball opens with win, softball teams sweep

The Stratford baseball team had to wait a few extra days to open its season, but the Red Devils did so with a big win over an FCIAC squad.

Also, both softball teams won, as well, highlighting a wind-swept Wednesday of action.

Here’s a look at what happened:

BASEBALL

Stratford 3, Darien 1

Senior pitcher Zach Fedak scattered six hits, striking out six while walking just two to lead the host Red Devils to a 3-2 win over Darien on Wednesday in the team’s season-opener.

The Red Devils jumped on top with a 2-0 lead and added a run in the sixth to earn the win.

Cameron Smith was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Stratford.

Trumbull 8, Bunnell 1

The host Bulldogs fell to a tough FCIAC team as Trumbull posted an 8-1 win on Wednesday.

Bunnell only managed four hits in the game, but it Colin Richards who broke up the perfect game w a single in the fifth inning.

Justin Herrera had an RBI double while Cullen Roper singled and scored. Pierce Barnum also had a single.

The Bulldogs are schedule to host Jonathan Law on Friday at 4:15 p.m.

Darien at Stratford, 4:15 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Bunnell 14, Bridgeport Central 12

Winning pitcher Kayla Morel went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a triple to lead Bunnell to its season-opening win on Wednesday.

Amanda Wallace added four hits, including a triple, while Kelly Bavolacco plated four with a double and a home run.

Stratford 7, Bethel 2

The Red Devils won their second game of the season with a 7-2 win over host Bethel.

Angela Grinrod fired a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and helped pace the offense, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs as Stratford improved to 2-0.

Rachel Newall was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, as well.

Stratford plays cross-town rival Bunnell on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF

Weston 181, Stratford 265

Zack Terlik led Stratford with a 54 on a tough, blustery day against Weston.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Milford 6, Stratford 1

Stratford’s Kelly Londa  won her match at fourth single, posting a 6-3, 5-7 (10-5) victory for the Red Devils.
