Thursday’s action provided a light schedule, but here’s what went down for the town’s high school sports teams:
Harding 6, Stratford 1
The Stratford High School boys soccer team lost, 6-1, to Harding, the host team, on Thursday.
Stratford’s defense looked shaky at the start of the match, and the team struggled to obtain possession and string together passes, but the Red Devils still scored first.
Carlos Fidalgo sent a through-ball to Thomas Castro, who tucked it past the Harding goalie for a 1-0 lead.
Stratford could not retain the lead for long, allowing Harding players to receive the ball in the middle of the field and drive through the center of Stratford’s defense, resulting in Harding’s equalizer.
Harding scored two more in quick succession, one on a penalty resulting from a clumsy challenge in the box.
With a minute left in the half, Stratford had a free-kick from just outside the penalty area.
The ball sailed over Stratford’s attacking players and Harding countered, with its center-forward scoring his third goal of the game just before halftime.
During halftime, the team talk focused on playing defense, and Stratford came out with a more defensive-minded formation.
Harding scored two more in less than five minutes, however.
Stratford’s second-string played the final 15 minutes, not conceding a goal and stringing together passes in the midfield.
Stratford, is 0-8 on the season, plays Friday at home against Kolbe Cathedral.
