H.S. ROUNDUP: Stratford girls give coach first win; Bunnell boys fall in final

A first win and a first loss were the highlights and lowlights of a Friday night of basketball.

At Stratford High’s Needham Gym, first-year Red Devils girls coach Kelsey Gilmore notched her first-ever varsity coaching victory.

At Bunnell, meanwhile, the Bulldogs dropped their first game of the season—a contest they should have won.

Here’s a look at yesterday’s action.

Stratford 52, Bridgeport Central 5

A balanced scoring attack led the Red Devils to the win, Gilmore’s first as a varsity coach.

Abby Anka netted 13 points while Sami Perley had 12 points for Stratford, which improved to 1-1. Amanda Ogrodowicz netted 10 while Leyna Upchurch netted six more.

Juliette Macisco dished out 8 assists for Stratford, which put the game away with a 19-point second quarter.

Notre Dame-Fairfield 40, Bunnell 39

Max Mitchell’s elbow jumper with 39 seconds left gave Notre Dame-Fairfield a 40-39 win over Bunnell in the championship game of the Bunnell Tip-off Tournament.

The Bulldogs had three shots to win the game, but missed all to slip to 1-1 on the season.

Derrick Gyimah’s 14 points led the Bunnell effort while Jaden McDowell had 10 and Kevin Lanham eight.

The Bulldogs led 37-31 after three quarters, but only scored two points in the final eight minutes.
