A first win and an eye-opening loss highlighted Monday’s week-opening action around town.

The Stratford girls golf team stunned Weston for its first victory this season while the Red Devils softball team scared the be-jeepers out of strong Notre Dame-Fairfield in a 1-0 loss.

Here’s a rundown of the day:

GIRLS GOLF

Stratford 266, Weston 280

Three senior golfers all recorded the best rounds of their careers as the Red Devils stunned Weston at the Aspectuck Valley Country Club on Monday.

According to the CIAC website, it is the first dual-match victory in the four-year history of the program.

Jennifer Melo led the way with a 59 while Chloe Pappas shot a 64 and Melissa Wilson fired a 66 for Stratford.

In an earlier meeting this season, Stratford fell to the Trojans by a 262-318 score.

The team squares off against Bunnell and Masuk on Tuesday at Whitney Farms Golf Club.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame-Fairfield 1, Stratford 0

The Red Devils threw a scared into the Lancers on Monday, falling 1-0 by giving up a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Notre Dame-Fairfield’s Brianna Brown had a no-hitter, but Stratford’s own Angela Grindrod—who has two no-hitters this season—was almost equal to the task, giving up just two hits while striking out 11.

Stratford hosts Weston on Tuesday.

Masuk 14, Bunnell 0

Kayla Morel and Sofia Santiago broke up the no-hitter late in the game as Masuk bested the Bulldogs in Stratford on Monday.

The Panthers raced out to a 10-0 lead in two innings en route to the win.

GIRLS TENNIS

Newtown 7, Bunnell 0

Bunnell’s Lucy Li continued her strong play at No. 1 singles, falling in a three-setter to Newtown’s top player.

Li fell by a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 score to highlight the day.

Weston 7, Stratford 0

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Bunnell sprinters shine at Bethel

On Monday, the Bulldogs traveled to Bethel to take on the host Wildcats, Pomperaug Panthers, and the Joel Barlow Falcons in SouthWest Conference track and field competition.

Although the team scores didn’t favor the Bulldogs, several Bulldogs would stand out above the rest in numerous events.

The 4×100 team of Marquis Lawrence, Tyreek Smith, Alex Mosley, and Christ N’Dabian continue to impress the league and are now eyeing a school record, plus league record, of 42.40 set by last year’s team of N’Dabian, Jonathan Cineus, Ramsley Exantus, and Eli Henry.

 The 2019 edition easily cruised into first place today with a time of 42.89 seconds. 

The 100-meter dash saw N’Dabian in first at 11.44 and Mosley capturing third at 11.97. 

The 200 saw N’Dabian in first at 22.87 with Smith in second at 23.44. 

Smith took first place in the long jump with leap of 21 feet 6 inches. 

The final scores were: Pomperaug 104 Bunnell 46; Bethel 96 Bunnell 54 Joel Barlow 80, Bunnell 70.

Next Monday, Bunnell hosts Stratford amongst other teams.

Ben Barg won three games in his match, battling tough in defeat for the Red Devils.
