It could have been the end of their season. Or, for the four senior members of the Stratford girls lacrosse team, the end of their high school careers.

Instead, the Red Devils bested Bethel by a 10-9 score as Stratford clinched not just a state tournament berth, but an SWC playoff berth, as well.

That was the highlight of another cold and wet May day around town.

Here’s a look at yesterday’s action.

Stratford 10, Bethel 9

A balanced scoring attack carried the Red Devils (7-9) to the postseason.

Elle Moshier’s three goals led the way while Edie Threshie and Amanda Ogrodowicz tallied two goals each. Kassidy Murtha, Kaitlin LaPia and Kelly Goddard added one goal each while Julia Mahoney had an assist.

Amelia Overby had four ground balls and three caused turnovers while Faye Rooney had two ground balls and a forced turnover.

Goalie Helen Lefever made seven saves and forced a trio of turnovers, too.

It was Senior Night at Penders Field and the Red Devils honored its four seniors–Mahoney, Rooney, Overby and Rassatou Karim.


Kolbe Cathedral 8, Bunnell 7

In their Senior Day game, Bunnell’s twin sisters Julianna and Sofia Santiago reached base four times each as the Bulldogs lost an 8-7 thriller to Kolbe Cathedral on Tuesday.

Julianna Santiago had three hits while Sofia had a hit and walked three times. Cloe Hanscome’s grand slam home run in the second was another offensive highlight for the Bulldogs.

Joel Barlow 8, Stratford 7

The Red Devils (13-5) suffered a walk-off defeat in the bottom of the seventh inning to Barlow (14-5).

Hayden Smith had a two-run single and Rachel Newall had an RBI double for the Red Devils while pitcher Angela Grindrod struck out six.


Masuk 188, Stratford 289

Ethan Gonzalez’s 57 led the way for the Red Devils at Whitney Farms Golf Course.
