H.S. ROUNDUP: Stratford girls soccer wins second straight game

The Stratford girls soccer team is on a winning streak. That game and outcome proved to be the highlight of Monday’s high school sports action.

Here’s a rundown.

GIRLS SOCCER

Stratford 7, Harding 1

For the first time since early in the 2017 season, the Stratford Red Devils girls soccer team has won two games in a row.

The Red Devils followed up their win over Kolbe Cathedral last week with a 7-1 victory over Harding on Monday afternoon in Bridgeport.

Seven different Stratford players scored goals. Chi-Chi Anekwe, Kaitlin LaPia, Jenna Zajac, Ava Buckmir, Valerie Duque, Izzy Taccogna and Rowena Smith all found the back of the net as the Red Devils improved to 2-8 on the season.

No goalkeeping information was reported to The Stratford Sports Scene.

BOYS SOCCER

Harding 4, Stratford 0

The Stratford High School boys soccer team lost at home to Harding on Monday, 4-0, the team’s second loss to the Bridgeport-based, non-SWC school in less than a week.

Harding beat Stratford 5-1 on Thursday.

In the first encounter, Harding led 4-0 at the half and their center-forward had a hat trick.

On Monday, Stratford focused its defense around the Harding playmaker and scorer, and held the team scoreless at the half.

Stratford struggled to string passes together, though, and could not create any real chances.

Less than two minutes into the second half, a Harding player beat a few defenders and was one-on-one with goalie Justin Forizs, who fouled the Harding player. The Presidents player converted the ensuing free-kick and Harding then scored three more within the next 15 minutes.

Similar to the teams’ first encounter, the Stratford second-string played the final 10 minutes of the game, not conceding any goals.

Stratford, now 1-9 on the season, is scheduled to play cross-town rival Bunnell, at Bunnell, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
