Bunnell 44, Masuk 30
The Bulldogs earned a big league win over Masuk, 44-30, on Thursday.
Conner Souza won by pin in 1:52 at 113 pounds.
“His opponent took the first shot but Conner stuffed it and smothered him with a tight front headlock to score the first takedown,” Bunnell coach Sean Sloat said. “He kept the pressure on with a mean cross-face and locked up a far side cradle to get the pin.”
Junior captain Julian Dematteo at 138 pounds also came away with a pin.
“He came in with a fury and took down his opponent and pinned him in 37 seconds,” Sloat said.
At 170 pounds, Sean Romero came back strong in his first match back from injury and pinned his opponent in 53 seconds.
That brought Brandon Toscano to the mat at 195 pounds.
“Brandon had an exciting match as always,” Sloat said.
Toscano gave up the first takedown but tied it up with a reversal. After a series of takedowns and escapes from both wrestlers, the Bulldog grappler trailed 7-5 after the first period.
Starting in the bottom position in the second, Toscano scored a quick escape, and then attacked right away to take his opponent down to his back to take the lead 11-7. He gave up a reversal and gained an escape to end the second period with a 12-9 lead.
Toscano started in the top position for period 3 and turned his opponent with a butcher to get three more near fall points. He tried securing his barbed wire pinning combination to earn the fall but he was unable to. Although he didn’t get the pin, Toscano still came away with the 15-9 victory.
Winning by forfeit were Ryan McLaughlin (106), Mike Amorando (126), Tanner Roper (138) and CJ Falotico at heavyweight.
“The guys looked great and we are right on target to peak for SWCs and States,” Sloat said. “This was an important SWC win for us.”
