HS Roundup: Girls basketball squads both fall

 A pair of girls basketball games were held on Tuesday night with the town teams both falling in SWC contests.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NOTRE DAME-FAIRFIELD 66, STRATFORD 30

Abby Anka netted 12 points for Stratford and Julia Torreso added nine more, but the Red Devils fell to 3-4 on the season with the loss at home.

Stratford played tough for a quarter, trailing the Lancers by a 15-10 count after the first eight minutes.

Notre Dame-Fairfield, which is ranked fifth in the latest GameTimeCT girls basketball poll, improved to 5-1 by outscoring the Red Devils 18-4 in the second quarter.

Yamani McCullough led the Lancers with 20 points while Ciara Brown added 15.

Stratford travels to Platt Tech on Wednesday.

BETHEL 51, BUNNELL 27

The Bulldogs (2-8) fell behind early and never recovered in a road loss to Bethel on Tuesday night.

Amanda Zdru scored six points while Aly Wright and Adrianna Debernedo netted five points each for Bunnell.

Bethel (4-4) was led by Maranda Nyborg’s 20 points.

Bunnell travels to Kolbe Cathedral on Friday.

BOYS SWIMMING

New Fairfield 83, Bunnell-Stratford Co-op 71

Miguel Vanegas and Brandon Russell both won individual events to lead the Bunnell-Stratford co-op boys swim team in their meet at New Fairifeld.

Vanegas won the 100 fly (1:06.43) and also finished second in the 200 free (no time was reported).

Russell won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.33) and finished third in the 100 free (1:02.87).

Steven Tarkowski took second in the 500 free (6:34.04), James Bragg took second in the 100 back (1:16.73) and third in the 50 free (29.30), Danyere Francis was third in the 100 back (1:14.90), Dominic Summa was third in the 100 breast (1:18.46) and Nikhil Shankar was third in the 200 IM (no time reported).

The team’s 400 free relay (Tarkowski, Adi Gowd, Summa and Vanegas) was awarded first in 4:33.80 while the 200 free relay (Shankar, Gowd, Russell and Vanegas) was second in 1:51.02.

The co-op squad hosts Brookfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Flood Middle School.
