The sun was shining on Saturday’s official opening day of the 2019 spring sports season.
As such, it was also shining on a couple of the town’s teams, which opened their respective campaigns with victories.
Stratford’s softball team blew open a close game late with an 18-6 win while the Bunnell baseball team posted a 7-2 win to open the season.
Here’s a look at the first Saturday of the season:
Stratford 18, Trinity Catholic 6
The Stratford High Red Devils exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow open a tight game and notch the season-opening, non-conference softball win at its home away from home, Birdseye Field.
Riley Matto was 3-for-3 with three doubles and four RBIs while Taylor Lubas and Angela Grinrod both went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs apiece.
Skyler Boibeaux had a two-out, two-run single to give Stratford the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.
Grinrod gave up just one hit and struck out 13 to lead the defense.
The Red Devils travel to Bethel on Wednesday.
Bunnell 7, Harding 2
Brett Batka fired a complete-game, three-hitter, giving up just one earned while striking out nine as the Bulldogs opened their season with the win on the road over Harding.
Colin Richards had three hits, including a big two-run single while Anthony Broadhurst had a two-run base knock of his own. Cullen Roper scored twice and an added an RBI, as well.
The Bulldogs host FCIAC power Trumbull on Wednesday in a non-league contest.
The Stratford-Bassick season-opener, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed due to what was reportedly an unintentional paperwork snafu involving the Lions.
The game has been pushed back to Friday, April 5 at 4:15 p.m.
The Red Devils now open the season on Wednesday, hosting traditional FCIAC stronghold Darien at 4:15 p.m.
Stamford 9, Bunnell 5
The Bulldogs fell just short in its opener courtesy of some hot Stamford goalkeeping in the second half.
Jacob Kydsych scored twice for Bunnell while Josh Giannoni, Will Heiden and Charles Stewart all scored, as well.
The Bulldogs host Pomperaug on Tuesday, under the lights at 7 p.m.
Lyman Hall 12, Stratford 5
The Red Devils hit the road for an early-morning game at Lyman Hall and fell by a 12-5 score.
As of this time, no further information was reported for this game.
Stratford hosts Brookfield on Tuesday at Penders Field.
Sheehan 14, Stratford 8
The Red Devils fell to Sheehan in a non-conference home opener on Saturday at Penders Field.
Kassidy Murtha scored five goals for Stratford while Edie Threshie chipped in with another three.
Goalie Helen Lefever made 11 saves while the Red Devils got off 11 shots against Sheehan.
Stratford travels to Brookfield on Tuesday.
