Seven Bunnell, Stratford wrestlers place at SWC Championships

SOUTHBURY—Bunnell High’s Nick Demanche finished as the runner-up at 182 pounds to highlight Saturday’s SWC Wrestling Championships at Pomperaug High School.

To make it to the finals, Demanche won his quarterfinal match and then pinned James Duhancik from Stratford High in the semifinals.  

In the championship match, Demanche lost in overtime, 3-1, to take second place.

Four wrestlers from town, including three from Bunnell High School, took third place.

For Bunnell, Ryan McLaughlin (126 pounds), Julian DeMatteo (145) and Brandon Toscano (195) all finished in third place as did Stratford’s Duhancik at 182.

McLaughlin pinned Foster Doucette of New Fairfield in 27 seconds in his consi final while DeMatteo earned a 6-0 decision over Lucas Vieira of Bethel, and Toscano pinned Omarrion Parisse of Stratford in 2:40.

Duhancik pinned Caleb Lupinski of Brookfield in 51 seconds to earn his third-place showing.

Also, for Stratford, Joshua Kydes took fourth overall at 138 pounds as did Parisse at 195.

Bunnell placed eighth as a team in the 12-team tournament with 74 points. Stratford was 11th win 49 points. The Red Devils were crowned Patriot Division champions in the SWC with a 6-2 SWC record during the regular season.

New Milford won the meet with 162 points.
