SHELTON—The Bunnell wrestling team took fifth at the competitive Shelton Invitational on Saturday, with two wrestlers bringing home some hardware with top finishes.
At 152 pounds, senior Julian DeMatteo took second place. He blew through his bracket earning a 46-second pin in the quarterfinals and then a 13-3 major decision in the semifinals. He lost his championship match by pin in the third period.
At 113 pounds, freshman Tyler Swist took third place. He gave up the first takedown of the match but quickly escaped and fired back with a takedown of his own to lead 3-2 going into the second period. After a flurry of reversals, escapes and takedowns in the second, he was leading 17-9 in the 3rd period and put his opponent to his back to get the pin.
Placing fourth for Bunnell was sophomore Ryan McLaughlin at 126 pounds, freshman Lex Vanicky at 132, sophomore Tanner Roper at 145, junior James Depina at 170 and sophomore Nick Demanche at 182.
